Overseas “simplified-Chinese traitors” took to the streets: from standing alone to embracing each other

When Taozi, a self-proclaimed “simplified-Chinese traitor,” stood amongst Cantonese-speaking Hong Kong protesters, shouting protest slogans in Mandarin, she realized for the first time that she wasn’t alone. After the Beijing Sitong Bridge incident, a group of Chinese students studying overseas started to protest in the streets and, thus, found their own voices. They identify each other by showing protest slogans written in simplified Chinese characters. They hope to “learn to be courageous and free” and to carry on the resistance started in Beijing one small act at a time.
